Maite Carranza is likely the most significant and international author for children writing in Catalan today; her celebrated work spans realistic, fantastic, and comic genres. In her latest, Safari, winner of the 2018 Edebé Infantil Prize, she uses a wildly hilarious style to tell the story of a mute boy named Dani. On a trip to Africa with his family, Dani gets lost in the jungle and adopted by a mama chimpanzee who adds him to her brood. The author invites readers in with her ironic tone so they can learn from primates, in order to “become more human, more just, and more humble.”
