The presence of Catalan and Balearic performing arts companies in leading international festivals and theatres has been reinforced by a new line of funding by the Ramon Llull Institute. The call is addressed to the managers of festival and exhibition facilities or circuits located outside the Spanish State who are interested in programming Catalan artistic proposals. This new tool represents a great qualitative and quantitative leap in one of the IRL's main missions: to promote the international projection of Catalan artistic creation.
The first edition of this line, endowed with €800,000, enables 85 Catalan companies to take the stage in 23 countries across Europe, Asia and South America, and make 235 performances during 2024. In addition to the figures, the quality of the equipment and festivals that have hosted or will host these performances are outstanding, as is the case of the Avignon Festival (France), Romaeuropa Festival (Italy), Seoul International Dance Festival (South Korea), Singapore International Festival of Arts (Singapore), UP Festival (Belgium), Inteatro Festival (Italy) or Bildstörung (Germany).
The result of the call reflects the great interest in street theatre as it is done in Catalonia, with its own creative force and aesthetics that endorse consolidated festivals and equipment from all over the world. This is the case of Cratère Surfaces, Chalon dans la Rue i Festival de Rue de Ramonville in France, Tollwood Summerfestival and Bildstörung in Germany, Helsingør Festival in Denmark, Sänafest in Norway, Artisti in Piazza i Mostra de Artes de Rua de Sines in Portugal, Freedom Arts festival in the United Kingdom, Spoffin Festival in the Netherlands, Sziget Festival in Hungary, Festival de Artes Cielos del Infinito in Chile, Spot Festival in Lithuania, Singapore International Festival of Arts in Singapore, Festival Internacional de la Cultura in Boyacá and Festival Internacional de Teatro del Caribe in Colombia and Sibiu International Theater Festival in Romania.
Regarding the dramatic arts, the Festival d'Avignon, the nerve centre of international performing arts, has programmed a play entirely in Catalan for the first time: Història d’un senglar (o alguna cosa de Ricard) (The Story of a wild boar (or something about Richard)) by the Uruguayan author Gabriel Calderón, with translation by Joan Sellent and interpreted by Joan Carreras. The play is a production of the Temporada Alta festival and the Grec Festival de Barcelona and is staged in Avignon from 12 to 21 July. This year's official programme also includes the Franco-Catalan company Baró d 'Evel, which is presenting Qui som, (Who we are) a circus, dance and poetry production.
This summer, Catalan drama is also the protagonist in Colombia. The V Encuentro Iberoamericano de Dramaturgia Punto Cadeneta Punto (V Ibero-American Punto Cadeneta Punto Dramatic Arts Meeting ), which takes place from 2 to 16 August in several cities of the country such as Bogotá and Medellín, has the Catalan language as a guest of honour. This will give visibility to the theatrical richness and diversity of Catalonia through a selection of playwrights who will carry out workshops, dramatised readings and round tables. These are Guillem Clua, Joan Yago, Clàudia Cedó and Albert Tola.
Catalan creative dance continues to show its great capacity for internationalisation, as does circus. We can see dance shows at Festival Solodos Endanza (Costa Rica), Scène National du Sud d 'Aquitaine (France) and Seoul International Dance Festival (South Korea), among others. Several Catalan circus companies are scheduled at UP Festival (Belgium), Festival Circolo (Netherlands), Tendenza Clown Festival (Italy), Vaudeville Rendez-Vous International Festival (Portugal) and Mirabilia International Circus & Performing Arts Festival (Italy).
Hybrid scenes are present in important Italian stages such as the Short Theatre, Inteatro Festival or the Triennale di Milano, and also at the Theater der Dinge Festival in Germany.
Finally, Catalan theatre for all audiences is an international reference point that will be present on the programmes of festivals such as Pinokio Teatre (Poland); FAER-Festival de Artes Escénicas de Rosario (Argentina), Chuncheon Puppet Festival (South Korea) and Bangkok International Children's Theatre Festival (Thailand).
