The Llull Fellowship will bring together international publishers in Barcelona during the Catalan Book Week

This year, the Llull's participation in the Catalan Book Week (La Setmana del Llibre en Català) also includes a round table on translation and multilingualism, and the presentation of the book A camp obert. Contemporary cultural practices co-edited with Arcàdia.




From 22 to 27 September, the Institut Ramon Llull is organising a new mission of international publishers to strengthen links and open up new opportunities for projecting Catalan literature abroad. 18 publishers and publishers from Europe, Asia and America are taking part in The Llull Fellowship 2024, organized within La Setmana del Llibre en Català. All of them will delve into the Catalan publishing sector through a programme that includes a personalised agenda of professional meetings selected according to the participants’ interests, introduction sessions to Catalan literature and the Catalan publishing world, informal meetings with writers, illustrators and translators, and visits to emblematic bookstores and an illustration school.

Meetings between foreign guests and Catalan editors and agents will take place at the Barcelona headquarters of the Col·legi d 'Arquitectes de Catalunya.

Presentation of A camp obert. Contemporary cultural practices ”

On 26 September at 5.15 pm at Stage 2 of La Setmana (Passeig Lluis Companys, Barcelona), the Llull Institute and the publisher Arcàdia present the book A Camp Obert. Contemporary cultural practices, where thinkers and artists from various fields reflect on 21st century culture with the aim of opening a global dialogue on creativity, imagination and knowledge.

Curated by Raül Garrigasait and Josep Ramoneda, it has essays by: Roger Bernat (playwright), Chiara Bottici (philosopher), Carolina Ciuti (curator of contemporary art), Gemma De les Coves (theoretical physicist), Antònia Folguera, Carles Novellas and Enric Palau (members of the Sónar festival), Eva Franch i Gilabert (architect), Michele Gazzola (expert in multilingual communication), Boris Groys (art critic and philosopher), Joan Magrané (composer), Katie Mitchell (theatre and opera director), Arcadi Navarro (biologist), Olivier Père (film critic), Perejaume (artist and poet), Albert Serra (film director) and Simona Škrabec (writer and translator). From new mythologies to reflections on artificial intelligence; from theatre to architecture, cinema and artistic and literary creation; from sociolinguistics to science and technology, this compendium portrays what we could understand today as culture, with no attempt to restrict it or exhaust its potential.

Roundtable on Translation and Multilingualism

The participation of the Llull Institute in La Setmana also includes the co-organization of the round table "Translation and multilingualism" on 26 September at 6:00 p.m. in Stage 2 of La Setmana, where the relationships of the authors and translators with their working languages and the considerations that are taken into account when writing or translating in a non-hegemonic language, among other issues, will be discussed. Jessica Zuan, Swiss poet in the Romansh language (Switzerland), Rory Williamson, editor of Pushkin Press (United Kingdom) and Ricard Ripoll, writer, translator and professor of French literature (Catalonia) will participate. The moderator will be Miquel Cabal, translator and teacher (Catalonia). This event is an initiative of EUNIC Barcelona (European Union National Institutes for Culture) and is organized by the Consulate General of Switzerland in Barcelona, the Institut Français, the British Council, the Representation of the European Commission in Barcelona and the Institut Ramon Llull, on the occasion of the European Day of Languages.

Another outstanding activity of La Setmana will take place on 23 September, at 11.15 am, on Stage 2, where the first of the authors who will be present at the Angoulême Comic Festival 2025 will be announced. Barcelona is the Festival’s guest city. The presentation will be given by Ester Roca, from the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona, Joan de Sola, from the Institut Ramon Llull, and Meritxell Puig, from the Federació d'Institucions Professionals del Còmic (FICOMIC). The three institutions have worked in coordination in selecting and preparing the programme of activities. Comic book artists Sara Soler and Pep Brocal, and journalist Jaume Vidal will also participate in the event.
