From 2 to 4 October, the Rencontres européennes de la traducción littéraire will convene translators, writers, editors, booksellers, librarians and representatives of training centres, residencies, festivals, fairs and institutions that support literary translation in Europe to discuss good practices and future challenges. Linguistic and editorial diversity, artificial intelligence, and freedom of expression are some of the topics that will be discussed during the working days that will take place in the European Parliament building.
This initiative is organised by the European Council of Associations of Literary Translators (CEATL) as part of the UNESCO World Book Capital programme, which this year is being held in Strasbourg.
The Institut Ramon Llull, a member of ENLIT, the European translation support network, will participate in this meeting with the goal of convening with translators of Catalan literature and engaging in discussions with peers and other stakeholders in the European literary industry about various aspects of translation. Julià Florit, from the Llull Literature Area, will participate in the round table Gathering data on literary translation markets and mapping grant opportunities, which will be held on 4 October at 11.45 am. Te Institut Ramon Llull is collaborating in the thematic workshop Language equality: Translating to and from medium and small-sized languages, which will take place on 3 October at 2.00 pm. Sabine Kirchmeier, president of EFNIL (European Federation of National Linguistic Institutions), Miquel Cabal Guarro, literary translator and professor at the University of Barcelona and Bohdana Nebora, curator of cultural projects and journalist at The Ukrainians Media will be taking part.
CEATL, an international non-profit platform based in Belgium, was established in 1993 with the aim of facilitating the exchange of experiences and knowledge between associations of literary translators from various European countries and collaborating to enhance the status and working conditions of translators. CEATL comprises 36 associations from 27 European countries, representing some 10,000 literary translators. The Associació d'Escriptors de Llengua Catalana (Association of Catalan Language Writers) (AELC) and the Associació col·legial d’escriptors de Catalunya (Association of Writers of Catalonia) (ACEC) are members. The translator Miquel Cabal Guarro, is on the executive committee, representing EFTA.
