From October 24 to 26, the FIBA festival in Buenos Aires will present a Catalan programme featuring four theatrical pieces

14/10/2024

This year, FIBA, a prominent performing arts festival held in Buenos Aires from 18 to 27 October, will showcase four Catalan productions on Argentine stages.

Euforia y desazón, by the El Eje company, and the trilogy formed by Mercè, by Cristina Clemente and Muguet Franc (presented in Catalonia as La paella dels dijous), Silvia, written and directed by Nelson Valente, and Rovira vs Rodríguez, by Cristina Clemente and Nelson Valente, will be staged under the name Puente Barcelona-Buenos Aires and from 24 to 26 October in the Argentine capital.

This program seeks to emphasise the historical and creative connection between these two cities, showcasing four works that have emerged from the cultural exchange among artists from Argentina and Catalonia.

First, the Trilogía del Deseo, a stage project consisting of three pieces that combine Catalan and Argentinian artistic, direction and drama teams.

This trilogy was born from the network of community theatres On el Teatre Batega (OTB) in co-production with the Festival Grec and includes 3 stage creations that address the cultural similarities and differences between Catalonia and Argentina. Its programming at FIBA is the response to a collaboration between creators and performers from both sides of the Atlantic first staged during the 2023 Festival Grec, where the 3 pieces were premièred. The international projection of the On el teatre Batega project in Buenos Aires and the production of the Trilogía del Deseo has been possible thanks to the Grec Festival de Barcelona and the l’Institut Català de les Empreses Culturals (Catalan Institute of Cultural Companies (ICEC)) within the framework of the Pla d’impuls del teatre de Catalunya (Plan to promote the theatre of Catalonia) 2023-2026 promoted by the Department de Cultura de la Generalitat.

Mercè (La paella dels Thursdays) was written by Cristina Clemente and is directed by Muguet Franc, Rovira versus Rodríguez was written and is directed jointly by Cristina Clemente and Nelson Valente and Silvia was written and is directed by Nelson Valente.

The Catalan programme is completed by the play Euphoria y desazón, by the Argentine playwright and director Sergio Boris and the El Eje company. Euphoria y desazón is part of the raw, edgy theatre that characterises El Eje, giving a lot of weight to the dramaturgy of acting. It premièred in the High Season 2023 and can currently be seen in the Beckett room, where it is scheduled until 13 October.

The Catalan companies will perform on 24, 25 and 26 October. Euphoria y desazón can be seen at the Beckett Theatre in Buenos Aires, while the trilogy is scheduled in the El Cultural San Martín theatre.

Round table
Apart from the theatrical performances, the Puente Barcelona - Buenos Aires round table will take place on 23 October: New challenges in the construction of international collaborations on the relationship between the performing creative universe of Buenos Aires and Catalonia with a historical and future perspective and the role of festivals, theatres and networks such as OTB and residency spaces in the internationalization of talent. Tania Brenlle, director of Sala Villarroel, Federico Irazábal, director of FIBA; Cristina Alonso, co-director of Teatre L'Artesà del Prat de Llobregat and Espai Australia in Buenos Aires; Silvina Martínez, co-director of Espai Australia in Buenos Aires; Georgina Corberó, manager of On el teatre Batega. The panel will be moderated by Debora Staiff, artistic and cultural producer, and presented by Maria Lladó, director of the Creation area of the Institut Ramon Llull.

FIBA, created in 1997, is one of the most important cultural events in the region. The festival focuses on theatrical and performing arts, especially the new trends in contemporary aesthetics throughout the disciplinary range: theatre, dance, music, visual arts and multidisciplinary works. It is also characterised by a double objective: to bring the international scene closer to the local public and to foster contact between local productions and the international artistic and professional fabric.
