The 13th edition of Temporada Alta Iberoamèrica once again brings Catalan theatre to Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Lima

30/01/2025

The festival, in partnership with the Institut Ramon Llull, continues its role as an exporter by sending the following works to the three participating countries this year: Las palabras de los otros by Roger Torns, H.I.I.I.T., and No sabemos nada del campo by Clàudia Serrahima Urgell. Temporada Alta Iberoamèrica will also host the Transatlantic Playwriting Tournament, featuring Jaume Viñas and Martina Cabanas.

The 13th edition of Temporada Alta Iberoamèrica kicks off on 2 February, continuing its commitment to showcasing Catalan theatre across the Atlantic while serving as a platform for creative exchange and the promotion of local artists and companies.

This year’s festival will run until 16 March. In detail, the programme in Lima (Peru) will take place from 13 February to 16 March, in Buenos Aires (Argentina) from 13 to 23 February, and in Montevideo (Uruguay) from 2 to 23 February.

The Catalan productions featured in the programme are: Las palabras de los otros, written and performed by Roger Torns, directed by Laia Alberch, and produced by H.I.I.I.T. This monologue delves into themes such as bullying, abuse of power, and toxic masculinity, exploring the mechanisms and role-playing dynamics that perpetuate these issues, particularly during adolescence.

The play will be performed on 13 and 14 February in Montevideo, 16 and 18 February in Buenos Aires, and 21 and 22 February in Lima.

Clàudia Serrahima Urgell will present No sabemos nada del campo, a collection of life experiences in a theatrical format that aims to capture a snapshot of the collective imagination surrounding social relationships in rural life.

The piece will be performed on 15 and 16 February in Montevideo, 19 and 20 February in Buenos Aires, and 23 and 24 February in Lima.

Finally, the Timbre 4 theatre in Buenos Aires once again hosts the Torneo de Dramaturgia Transatlántico, now in its 13th edition, continuing the tradition of pitting Catalan—and in some cases, Balearic—writers against Argentine playwrights.

This year’s tournament features the runner-up (Martina Cabanas) and winner (Jaume Viñas) of last year’s Catalan competition. Jaume Viñas, with his play Fantasyland, and Martina Cabanas, with Èxodus Premium, face the challenge of translating their works into Spanish and directing rehearsals with Argentine actors. Their texts will go head-to-head with those of playwrights from Buenos Aires.

Internationalisation of the Catalan Theatre Scene
The project, initiated by Temporada Alta over a decade ago and now firmly established, aims to create a bridge between the Catalan and Ibero-American theatre scenes, promoting local playwriting and its creators. Beyond the programme itself, the festival serves as a meeting point for artists and industry professionals, fostering exchange and collaboration. It also provides an opportunity to expand the international circuit of performances championed by Temporada Alta.

The Temporada Alta Iberoamèrica programme is made possible through the collaboration of the Institut Ramon Llull, an organisation dedicated to promoting the Catalan language and culture worldwide, alongside Temporada Alta and its three Ibero-American venues.
