Taking over the entire exhibition space at the Jeu de Paume, the show highlights the fundamental distinction between “analytical AI” (including computer vision and facial recognition systems) and “generative AI.” It also examines how contemporary artists use these artificial intelligences with both critical and experimental intent.
Among the forty or so artists selected by the curatorial team is internationally renowned Catalan artist Joan Fontcuberta, who, despite having taken part in other events at the Jeu de Paume, will be exhibiting there for the first time.
Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) is an artist, essayist, critic and art promoter specialising in photography. As a curator, he has worked for the National Library of Madrid, the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, and Arts Santa Mònica in Barcelona. His work has been exhibited in over thirty museums and art venues across Europe, the Americas, and Japan: the Museum of Modern Art (New York), IVAM (València), the Parco Gallery (Tokyo), and the National Art Museum of Catalonia (Barcelona), among others.
The selection also includes the artist collective Taller Estampa, a group of programmers, filmmakers and researchers working in the fields of audiovisual media and digital environments. Their practice is based on a critical and archaeological approach to audiovisual technologies, research into the tools and ideologies of artificial intelligence, and experimental animation techniques. Estampa received the Digital Culture award for their project Cartography of Generative AI at the 2024 Ciutat de Barcelona Awards.
The studio is made up of Roc Albalat, graphic designer and filmmaker (Barcelona, 1980), Pau Artigas, developer (Barcelona, 1978), Marcel Pié, filmmaker and university lecturer (Barcelona, 1980), Marc Padró, developer (Barcelona, 1990), and Daniel Pitarch, filmmaker and researcher (Barcelona, 1980).
