Kata Varju
Kata Varju (Pápa, Hungary, 1983) is an associate professor at the University of Vic, a language teacher, translator, and philologist. She studied Hispanic Philology to get closer to Catalan culture with the help of Professor Kálmán Faluba. She earned a PhD in literature about the work of Roberto Bolaño.
She has translated more than 30 books from Catalan, Spanish, and English into Hungarian, the first of which was a novel by Maria Àngels Anglada, a native of Vic. In 2012, she obtained a grant from the Institut Ramon Llull to learn Catalan in Barcelona. In 2015, she received a scholarship from the Institut d'Estudis Catalans to work on an analysis of the work of Jaume Cabré, and that same year, she was awarded the Institut Ramon Llull’s translation grant three times, allowing her to translate in Bellaterra. She translated Incerta glòria by Joan Sales and had the opportunity to participate in a discussion organized by the Institut Ramon Llull with María Bohigas about the translation of this work.
In 2018, she obtained the Babits Mihály Műfordító Ösztöndíj literary translation grant in Hungary for the translation of El vent de la nit by Joan Sales. In 2023, she received the Dienes Valéria grant for the translation of an essay. Since 2023, she has been living in Vic, where she is working on a PhD on the translation of Catalan narrative under the supervision of Pere Quer. She is a member of the Hungarian Association of Literary Translators (MEGY).
